Art
At Springfield Infant School and Nursery, we intend for children to become expressive, free and imaginative when using a wide variety of media. Throughout their time at Springfield, we provide them with the opportunity to practise important artistic skills and for these skills to be built upon and refined over time. It is our hope that the children then feel increasingly confident to apply these skills when working on an independent artistic project.
The purpose of teaching Art and Design at Springfield is to provide the children with the chance to express themselves creatively and to communicate their feelings, emotions and opinions, when perhaps they cannot find the words to describe these. We hope to foster a real passion for Art and Design within our school by encouraging personal creativity and independence of choice, by bringing artists into school to work alongside the children and by organising art days/weeks throughout the year.
We aspire to teach the children about a variety of different artists, both classic and contemporary, in the hope that this will inspire a range of future artists. Some of the artists that we cover throughout Key Stage 1 include, Karen Lederer, Paul Klee, Beth Krommes, Wassily Kandinsky and John Kindness. At Springfield, we also use Art and Design as a tool to develop the children’s oracy and communication skills, by encouraging the children to appreciate and critique the work of themselves, their peers and other artists from all around the world.
