Reception

Autumn Term 1

This half term reception have focused on the topic 'Marvellous Me'. We started by learning about ourselves, naming the parts of our bodies, our likes and dislikes and we have thought about what makes us unique and special. We used our hands to create some handprint artwork, painted our self-portraits and had fun drawing around each other to label our body parts. We have been working on our independence this half term, learning how to recognise our name in order to put our own things away, having a go at writing our names and learning to dress and undress ourselves for PE. We have also thought about who is in our families and where we live. We have enjoyed a walk around our local area looking for key features including shops, the dentist, the doctors, the post office, local churches and our school.

Autumn Term 2

This half term we have learnt about 'Awesome Autumn'. We looked at seasonal changed and went to Christchurch Park to look for signs of Autumn. We collected leaves and used these to create Leaf Man pictures based on the 'Leaf Man' story we read. We also used autumnal objects to create some artwork in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. We looked at a range of religious festivals including Diwali and Christmas. We finished the term by learning the Christmas story and recreating this with our own nativity play.

Spring Term

During the first half term, we learnt about Wonderful Winter. We discussed what the weather is like and how the seasons change. We explored the properties of ice and had to save some animals who were trapped, thinking of ways to melt the ice to free them. We learnt about the Arctic and Antarctica and the animals that live there. After half term, we learnt about Spring. We looked for signs of Spring around the school grounds and talked about new life, growth and life cycles. We visited Easton Farm Park and had a lovely day learning about mothers and their babies, how baby animals are cared for and we were able to interact with the lambs, chicks, rabbits, goats and horses.

 Summer Term

This half term we learned about Amazing Animals! We started by making a tally chart of our pets and talked about what they need to be happy and healthy. We then moved on to learning about some of the biggest creatures that have ever lived on earth – the dinosaurs! We loved learning all the long names. Finally we thought about some of the different habitats animals live in (Rainforest, Savannah and Under the Sea) and found out about some really exotic creatures as we explored their homes. We finished the year by learning about sea life and the ocean and we enjoyed a much needed day out at Felixstowe beach.
