Science
At Springfield Infants and Nursery Science is a focal subject that is taught weekly throughout the academic year. We support children to take a keen interest in the world around them and foster a love of science by making it as practical and real as possible. Children in Early Years take part in weekly Forest School sessions where they can observe change throughout the year. Children in KS1 explore their immediate environment hands on by going into our wild areas and searching for and identifying animals, insects, plants and habitats. They are encouraged to ask and answer questions and to support each other to find out the answers. Children are taught a wide range of scientific vocabulary which they love to use. They observe change through the seasons by watching nature and the weather. We offer lots of opportunities to investigate and predict and children love becoming a real scientist. They explore a wide range of materials and discover what the materials are used for.
The whole School comes together once a year for ‘science week’ where we have visitors come to School to enhance our curriculum. We take part in community events and children experience a wide range of practical activities based on a common theme.
Science teaches our children so many important skills including observation, questioning, prediction, discussion, and exploration. In science lessons children are engaged, show curiosity and are inquisitive. Science helps children to make sense of the world around them and understand real life situations.
