Year 2
Autumn term 1
In Maths, the children have been securing their understanding in place value and the number system. We’d love the children to practice making 10 and 20 as well as counting backwards from 100. The children have been very busy in Literacy this half term: writing stories, instructions and character descriptions. We have continued to practise both reading and the spelling of the year 2 words, (these can be found at the back of your diary). It will really help your child if you can practise these at home too. In Art, the children have been able to show their creative skills mark making and have learnt about the artist Kandinsky and abstract art. In Geography, we have been on a walk to enhance our learning of human and physical features in our local area. We have been busy in DT creating a healthy 'salad in a jar' and mastering our cutting skills!
Autumn Term 2
It has been an exciting and busy half term!
The children have loved learning about The Great Fire of London in History. They are now experts on why the fire spread, how it stopped and how things have changed since 1666. The topic was brought to life during our Great Fire of London day and we could see how quickly the fire spread when we burnt our houses. The children have written a non-chronological report all about The Great Fire of London.
In Science, the children have been learning about materials, their properties and their different uses. We have carried out experiments to test different materials absorbency and whether they are waterproof.
In Art, the children enjoyed making a 3D fish and decorating it in an aboriginal art style.
This term in Maths we have all been learning to add and subtract using our knowledge of tens/ones and using a number line. Keep practising at home! It would be great if you could begin to explore 2D and 3D shape ready for the New Year.
Spring Term
We had a busy Spring Term! Year 2 loved going swimming each week and developing their confidence and love of the water. In Geography, we enjoyed learning about the Yanomani people who live in The Amazon Rainforest. We explored the layers of the Rainforest and what animals might be found living there. Later on in the term, we recapped our knowledge of human and physical features and applied this to our local area. In DT, we had fun revisiting our sewing skills and perfecting our use of the overstitch. During our Science lessons, Year 2 learnt about the conditions that are needed to help seeds and bulbs grow healthy and strong. The children performed a class experiment to develop their knowledge of this and also how some plants adapt to the conditions in which they grow in.
Summer Term
During the Summer Term, as part of their Geography learning, Year 2 recapped their knowledge of the Countries that make up the UK and the Continents around the world. The children enjoyed learning about Africa and conducted a study of Kenya, with a particular focus on the city of Nairobi. During Literacy lessons, the children learnt about the features of non-fiction writing and wrote amazing non-chronological reports about Kenya. Their learning was enhanced further with a trip to Colchester Zoo and a workshop on African animals. To celebrate the children moving onto their new schools after the summer holidays, Year 2 had a brilliant day out at Bewilderwood. They had fun running and climbing on the many wooden structures in the woods, sliding down the tall slides and zooming on the zip wires!
